Capital Health is a scent-free environment with posters indicating such at the nursing stations throughout most of the hospitals. Has anyone ever noticed these signs or if there are any signs at the entry doors?
Do you know of any doctors, dentists, massage therapists, chiropractors, naturopaths etc. whose offices are fragrance free?

We are a fragrence free resort in Valemount, 11/2 hours from Jasper. But thats not my comment. I want to recommend my Dentist, Dr. Terry Clark in Sherwood Park, Alta. He is a biological dentist – uses most biocompatible products on the market. But also it is a scent free environment. His wife Dr. Laurena Clark is a naturopath/dentist who is chemically sensitive therefor their practice has evolved to a wholistic practice.

Hi… I was hoping for a bigger list of options hah! 🙁 I just got essentially dumped by the clinic I went to for over a decade (by far the best chiro out of a couple dozen that I tried over the years here and on my travels… sigh) and have nobody to go to now for adjustments or massage. Since my knees & back & shoulders are often acting up this is a scary position to be in. This DC had Febreze and stinky cheap soap in the bathroom and wipes the tables with Lysol, & wears cologne (though in a very small amount & a decent quality, to his credit) & since my MCS quadrupled in severity thanks to a workplace a-hole this fall, & I can no longer “let thinfs slide” out of my fear of conflict, I had been working on him. I gave him a few pamphlets about MCS & how it happens that the gov’t doesn’t regulate fragrance, how hazardous many ingredients are, a little blurb from the Human Rights board saying MCS is a recognised disability (to prove it is legit & not imaginary), wrote down the ewg website so he could check any products he uses for himself & read about their scary ingredients… maybe I overdid it. But it was jyst twi appointments where I spoke of this & one of them wwhere I brought printouts, & I didn’t corner him for an hour…just had a normal length visit so I was not EXTREMELY pushy. I wanted him to consider making the clinic scent free. Put up a sign. Make the one stink-addict massage therapist stop using Gain (her sheets & clothes stank up the whole place) & scented candles. I wasn’t asking him for a lot really. Well the third visit I arrived to a very strong sweet fruity smell which confused me til I spotted an aerosol can of Glade “appke pie” or something. Instead of making things better for me he apparently decided to spit in my face. I had to flee of course. I am a big strong pipefitter and yet I cried all the way home. It is just so cruel when people would rather ruin our lives than switch brand of soap & stuff… how do they weigh the pros & cons & decide that?! How can someone who has protected my health for his job, for a dozen years, decide my healthdoesn’t matter to him? The betrayal was very painful. But the next step is finding a new chiro (or physio or massage therapist… someone to help when my back goes out in the future!). So I got Googling & found you. Do you know of any other places I could look to try to find scent-free services? I will need a safe dentist too and a general practitioner (mine, when I asked him to refer me to someone for mcs … do you think he hooked me up with an allergist or an adrenal expert or anything? hah… he referred me to a shrink. But I suppose you are used to these things & aren’t as easily shocked as a newbie like me.)

I do have one tip: My Naturopath seems very very smart and is strict about no fragrance. He patched me up really well after an acute chemical toxicity about 2006 (I breathed some nasty stuff at the tarsands and lost my sense of smell for nearly a year, was in bed for six weeks, the first couple weeks my stools were beige and my pupils were dilated constantly… I was pretty poisoned… never found out what but one of the toxins was benzene) I only wish I had kept seeing him regularly to address the chronic, more subtle toxicity I apparently have going on. Anyway I am back with him now and really believe he will improve me. His prices are decent and he does a good job. For anyone who also has emf concerns though, he is a block away from a humongous power line. He is Dr Nowazek and calls his clinic Green Apple Health Care. 780-485-9468, 9148 23ave

Roots on Whyte Dental Clinic offers biocompatable materials in a scent-free & fragrance free setting. They also use a surgical air filtration system plus their whole ceiling has tiles that are designed to passively filter any chemicals. They also avoid amalgam with mercury and even fluoride is an option not the rule. They offer ceramic one appointment fillings, crowns etc. avoiding metal whenever possible. All-in-all these guys are really trying to give the extra care for their patients.

Those who are negatively affected by fragrances and chemicals either in a public place, medical provider, governmental office, workplace (etc) must create dialog with the provider or person of importance. If we don’t make those who are in a position of control aware of the situation, we are simply allowing others to control our future. MCS is not only a disability, but also falls under the protection of the ADA (Americans with Disabilities). It’s important to be heard in an intelligent manner. Second-hand fragrance should be treated the same as second-hand smoke. Contact your political representatives and don’t take no for an answer. The more noise we make the sooner things will change. Note: OSHA says an employer has a duty to provide fresh air to it’s employees. That doesn’t mean air fresheners, chemical cleaners, and over-perfumed coworkers are OK. No one has the right to stink up the air you are required to breathe. A complaint to your local ADA office (with medical condition confirmation) is a great way to get an employers attention and to initiate changes in the workplace. Take a look at the D.O.J. website for ways to approach your employer on the subject of fragrance contamination in the workplace.
